Airec focuses on the design and manufacture of highly efficient brazed stainless steel plate heat exchangers. The typical target applications are those where standard products commonly available on the market do not completely meet the customer’s needs. Depending on the application, Airec heat exchangers provide improvements such as higher efficiency and condensation rates, lower pressure drop, increased compactness, wider operating temperature ranges, and reduced cost.
In some cases, where the advantages are considered to justify the development efforts, Airec can also commit to deliver a tailor-made heat exchanger solution outside its own standard product portfolio.

Airec uses the latest software technologies in both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element method (FEM), carrying out as much of the development work as possible before the prototyping and first series production stages, which are also carried out in-house. Airec’s strong team of research engineers combined with small series manufacturing capacity enable multiple projects to be handled in parallel, including both internal product development and customer projects.
The plate heat exchangers are manufactured using vacuum brazing. The heat exchanger plates are stamped from a stainless steel coil, stacked together, and brazed using either copper or nickel as the brazing material. The vacuum ensures that the material is not contaminated during the brazing process. In the brazing process, the brazing alloy melts and wets all the contact surfaces between the plates, forming brazed joints once the units cool to ambient temperature. The brazed heat exchangers are strong and reliable units that can operate with zero or very little maintenance, depending on the application.

Plate is better than tube
Plate heat exchangers are far more efficient and compact than heat exchangers based on tubes. The reason is that two plates forming a channel provide a more optimized surface for heat transfer compared with a tube. The plate configuration is superior in terms of compactness (area per volume), heat transfer coefficient, and pressure drop. Furthermore, the tubes create wakes that contribute almost nothing to heat transfer and create additional pressure drop not invested in heat transfer (i.e. shear forces at the wall).
Airec focuses on optimizing plate heat exchanger designs for applications where traditional plate heat exchangers are not suitable, typically gas-to-liquid heat transfer with highly asymmetrical flows.
Airec’s designs normally handle configurations with volume flows 100-10 000 times greater on one side than the other. Traditional plate heat exchangers can normally handle asymmetry up to 1:10.
High gas temperature
Airec heat exchangers are designed to handle the high gas temperatures involved in many heat recovery applications. The critical design aspects are the inlet of the hot gases into the heat exchanger and protecting the plate material from overheating. Airec has patented a special plate design that makes optimal use of the cooling media to maintain an acceptable temperature at the plate surface. The Airec design has been proven a very reliable technical solution, with thousands of installed units running problem-free for years. The lifetime of Airec products is much longer than that of traditional plate heat exchangers under the same conditions. This, combined with the lower pressure drop thanks to the asymmetrical design, means that in many cases Airec’s plate heat exchanger is the only option available on the market.
